IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Thanks to two relay wins and 14 'A' finalists in individual events, the No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team increased its lead at the Hawkeye Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 3), held at Iowa's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Michigan currently leads the eight-team field with 631 points after two days.
Similar to Friday (Dec. 2), the Wolverines got off to a sweltering start on the opening relay (200 medley), as its 'A' and 'B' teams each surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. The 'A' team of junior Ashley Cohagen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), sophomore Angela Chokran (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North), and seniors Caitlin Dauw (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Alexa Mehesan (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) won the race in 1:39.18 -- more than a three-second differential from the team's previous season high (1:42.97) -- placing them second on the school's all-time list for that race, and giving them the fourth-fastest time in the nation among qualified relay teams. The quartet also set new meet and pool records in the victory.
Michigan dominated the field in the 100-yard butterfly, occupying the top three spots, with each swimmer achieving the NCAA consideration standard. Dauw took top honors with a time of 53 seconds flat, with Mehesan in second (53.94) and Cohagen in third (54.32).
In the 400-yard individual medley, junior Adrienne Bicek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) finished second in 4:17.43, meeting the NCAA B standard. Senior Kristyne Cole (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and junior Kally Fayhee (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary) also gave the Maize and Blue points after finishing second (1:49.09) and third (1:49.36) in the 200-yard freestyle.
Michigan also had three finish inside the top eight in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke. Chokran, and juniors Melissa Lang (Edison, N.J./Bishop George) and Julia Andracki (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) finished second through fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke, as each of their times met the NCAA consideration standard. Cohagen, freshman Claudia Lau (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Girls' School) and Mehesan were second, fifth, and eighth, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke.
The Wolverines closed out the night win another relay win, this time in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Bicek, Cole, Fayhee and senior Liz Johnson (Milford, Mich./Milford) touched the wall with a collective time of 7:20.61, which set meet and pool records and met the NCAA B standard.
Over in the diving well, senior Amanda Lohman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) took home third place off the three-meter springboard. She scored 323.20 in the finals -- a team season best -- shortly down from her preliminaries score of 337.80.
Michigan wraps up competition at the Hawkeye Invitational tomorrow (Sunday, Dec. 4) inside the Iowa Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. CST, with the finals beginning at 4 p.m.
