KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's swimmers wrapped up their three-day appearance today (Saturday, Dec. 7) at the U.S. Winter National Championships, placing seventh with 128 points inside Allan Jones Aquatic Center.
The day was highlighted by senior Angela Chokran's (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) eighth-place finish in the 'A' final of the 200-yard breaststroke, where she touched in 2:13.36. During the morning prelims, she earned an NCAA 'B' cut (2:11.30), her third in the last three days (200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke).
Michigan had several other 'B' finalists during the evening session, including junior Claudia Lau (Hong Kong, China/Dicoesan Girls' School) in the 200-yard backstroke; sophomore Zoe Mattingly (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) and freshman Julia Fiks Salem (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Domus Sapientiea) in the 100-yard freestyle; and senior Courtney Beidler (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) in the 200-yard butterfly. That quartet clocked in with NCAA 'B' marks.
Lau set a new personal best in her event (1:57.37), and Mattingly and Fiks Salem achieved new personal bests as well at 49.71 and 49.75, respectively.
Sophomore Marni Oldershaw (Oakville, Ontario/Iroquios Ridge) earned two of U-M's 10 NCAA 'B' cuts on the day in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard butterfly.
The Maize and Blue will not compete again until the New Year following its annual training trip between Christmas and New Year's Day. The divers will compete at the Mike Pepe Invitational on Jan. 3 at noon in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The swimmers will race in the Orange Bowl Classic, also on Jan. 3, beginning at 2 p.m. in Key Largo, Fla.
