Michigan Head Coach Mike Bottom
On the women's team performance ... "Angie (Chokran) made a final, which was great to see. Any time you can make a final at nationals is a good thing. She was right there. On the relay, we watched Ali DeLoof go out real fast with a 22.00 in the first 50 of her 100-yard freestyle. It's been pretty cool to watch our sprinters. Her and Julia (Fiks Salem) both went under 50 seconds, whereas last year, we only had one all year. They're starting to come around. Courtney (Beidler) was tough in the 200-yard butterfly and got better in that, as did Marni (Oldershaw). Marie (Georger) was great and keeps getting better in the IM and backstrokes. We'll look for her to continue that and score some big points. And Zoe (Mattingly) swam three events tonight and really showed some toughness."
On competing with a top team like California ... "Cal stands way above us on that mountain and yet to be able to be in the same arena with them and get a punch in every now and again was a good thing for us. We're moving along in that direction. They are very stacked. You look at what is happening there, and they are cranking. They're going to be on top for a while."
On his overall takeaway from the meet on both sides ... "We're getting better on all fronts, but we aren't where we need to be in order to perform at a high level at the end of the season. We have to get better in our technique and execution. We DQed three relays, missed some turns and missed some pacing. We can be better. This team will go back to Ann Arbor and get better."
