PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior Deirdre Jones (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville) and freshman Marni Oldershaw (Oakville, Ontario/Iroquois Ridge) of the No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team were tabbed Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week and Big Ten Freshman of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced on Tuesday (Jan. 8).
Jones and Oldershaw won two races each to help Michigan win the Orange Bowl Classic last Thursday (Jan. 3) in Key Largo, Fla. Jones took first in the 100-meter freestyle (57.64) and 50-meter freestyle (26.50), setting meet records in the latter and as part of the 200-meter freestyle relay (1:46.59). She also swam on the 'B' squad in the 200-meter medley relay, finishing second (1:56.84). It is the first weekly honor of her career.
Oldershaw picks up her second Freshman of the Week honor of the season, having received the award back on Dec. 4. She won the 50-meter breaststroke (32.79) and 200-meter individual medley (2:16.73) -- setting new meet records in both races -- while assisting the 'B' team in the 200-meter medley relay to a second-place finish (1:56.84).
Michigan returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 12, as it faces No. 21 Notre Dame and Northwestern in a double-dual meet in South Bend, Ind. The meet will begin at 1 p.m.
