PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Seniors Alexa Mehesan (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) and Amanda Lohman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) of the No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team have been named Big Ten Co-Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced Tuesday (Jan. 17). It is the second straight week that Michigan has won both awards, after Lohman and senior Caitlin Dauw (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) won the awards last week.
Both Mehesan and Lohman were instrumental in helping Michigan to wins against Northwestern (169-126) and Notre Dame (180-115) last Saturday (Jan. 14) at Canham Natatorium. Mehesan, who shares the award this week with Minnesota's Haley Spencer, won the 50-yard freestyle (23.23) and 100-yard butterfly (54.62) while also helping the Wolverines to a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.34). Mehesan has yet to be defeated in the 50-yard freestyle (7-0). She is a first-time recipient of the weekly award.
Lohman led the U-M diving contingent for the second straight week, scoring 347.50 to take first place on three-meter and a career-high 311.05 in a second-place finish on one-meter. She wins the award for the fifth time in her collegiate career and second time this season.
The Wolverines return to the pool on Saturday (Jan. 21), when they race at 1 p.m. against No. 17 Ohio State at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
