IRVINE, Calif. -- Seven current members of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team were in action at the Phillips 66 National Championships, which wrapped up on Sunday (Aug. 10) at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Complex.

Among the standouts were a pair of backstrokers: junior Ali DeLoof (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) and freshman Clara Smiddy (Miami, Fla.). DeLoof made the championship final in the only two events she was entered in, taking fourth in the 50-meter backstroke and eighth in the 100-meter backstroke. Smiddy swam four individual events at the meet, finishing as high as sixth in the 100-meter backstroke. She also had consolation finals appearances in both the 50-meter backstroke (ninth) and 200-meter backstroke (11th).

Just days removed from winning a junior national championship in the 200-meter breaststroke, another freshman, Emily Kopas (Davie, Fla./University School), earned several consolation swims, taking 17th in that race against senior-level competition and 21st in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Freshman Gillian Ryan (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown Area) had second swims in two championship heats of the distance races, taking fourth in the 1,500-meter freestyle and seventh in the 400-meter freestyle. She was also 11th in the 800-meter freestyle. Senior Kelsey Cummings (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) also swam in two distance races, finishing as high as 14th in the 1,500-meter freestyle.

Two other juniors were in action, including Zoe Mattingly (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville), who was entered in five events, and Marie Georger (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep), who was in two. Additionally, former U-M swimmer Justine (Mueller) Bowker swam four events, including a high finish of 14th in the 200-meter individual medley.

Several of these swimmers are also up for roster spots on the United States' rosters for the Junior Pan Pacific Championships, World Championships and Pan American Games. Those rosters will be announced at a later date by USA Swimming.
