The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team ushers in a new era this weekend, opening the 2012-13 season with a meet against Big Ten rival Wisconsin inside Canham Natatorim. The meet, which will be a co-ed dual meet, begins at 10:30 a.m. Admission is free.


Open Season ... Michigan is 19-3 all-time in dual meets against Wisconsin. The two teams have faced each other only once since the 1991-92 season, with Wisconsin winning the dual, 150-144, back in 2000. The Wolverines have lost their last two season-opening dual meets (both to Minnesota). The last time Michigan won a season-opening dual meet was 2009, when it beat Notre Dame, 165-133, in South Bend, Ind.

A New Era ... On Aug. 10, University of Michigan director of athletics Dave Brandon announced the combination of the men's and women's swimming and diving programs, and that Mike Bottom has been named head swimming coach for both teams. On Aug. 30, Bottom announced his coaching staff, which includes associate head coaches Josh White and Rick Bishop, and assistant coaches Mark Hill and Danielle Tansel. KZ Li continues to serve as head diving coach. [ Release ]

Bishop and Tansel are the new additions to the coaching staff and will work primarily with the women's team. Bishop spent the past four years at USA Swimming in Colorado Springs, Colo., most recently working as manager of coach services and education. Tansel comes to Ann Arbor after holding previous assistant coaching positions at Richmond (2008-11) and SMU (2011-12). [ Release ]

Wolverines at U.S. Olympic Trials ... Eight current Michigan swimmers competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials earlier this summer, including Ashley Cohagen, Courtney Beidler, Julia Andracki, Angela Chokran, Adrienne Bicek and freshmen Marie Georger, Zoe Mattingly and Jessica Wolf. Of those eight, Georger recorded the highest finish in a final, taking 23rd in the 200-meter backstroke (2:14.77). [ Results ]

Who's Back ... The Wolverines return 26 varsity letterwinners off last year's squad, including a 10-person senior class. Ashley Cohagen and Angela Chokran both made "A" finals at the 2012 Big Ten Championships last season.

Fresh Faces ... In addition to a 10-person senior class, Michigan also has 10 new freshmen on their roster this season, including swimmers Marni Oldershaw (Oakville, Ontario), Zoe Mattingly (Zionsville, Ind.), Sharalynn Missiuna (Oakville, Ontario), Ali DeLoof (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), Marie Georger (Erie, Pa.) and Jessica Wolf (Waukesha, Wis.), and divers Sarah Kamstra (Zeeland, Mich.), Cameron Monroe (Plainwell, Mich.), Elena Ghormley (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Emmy Orrico (Commerce Township, Mich.). Several swimmers were ranked in CollegeSwimming.com's Top 100 Rankings, including Oldershaw (No. 23), Mattingly (No. 60), and Georger (No. 61). Wolf was just outside the rankings at No. 102.

Diving In ... The Michigan divers enter the 2012-13 season with one of its largest contingents in years, as nine divers dot the roster. Following the graduation of Amanda Lohman, juniors Erin Bridgewater and Brianna Maroukis lead the group, with a trio of rising sophomores (Carey Chen, Marina Nazario, Emily Boyd).

Yes, Captain ... Senior swimmers Val Barthelemy and Kally Fayhee and junior diver Brianna Maroukis have been named team captains for the 2012-13 season.

2011-12 Recap ... Michigan finished eighth at the 2012 Big Ten Championships. Caitlin Dauw and Amanda Lohman represented the Wolverines at the NCAA Championships, both earning NCAA All-America honorable mentions.
