The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team kicks off the 2011-12 season this weekend, as it travels to Big Ten rival Minnesota for a two-day competition at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. CDT on Friday (Oct. 7) and conclude at noon on Saturday (Oct. 8).
Who's Back ... Michigan returns 24 letterwinners off last year's roster, including six NCAA All-America honorable mentions and three Big Ten champions. Highlighting the roster is a group of seven seniors, led by Caitlin Dauw, Alexa Mehesan and Amanda Lohman. Last season, Dauw was awarded with three NCAA All-America honorable mentions and two Big Ten Conference championships (100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle relay). Mehesan and junior Deirdre Jones return from that championship-winning relay team, while Lohman established herself as the team's top diver after qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season. Also back is sophomore Angela Chokran, who was an NCAA All-America honorable mention last season.
Fresh Faces ... Ten freshmen dot the roster this season: Emily Boyd (Monrovia, Calif./Flintridge Sacret Heart Academy), Carey Chen (Vancouver, British Columbia/University Hill Secondary), Kayla Douglas (Livonia, Mich./Franklin), Janel Hathaway (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Consolidated Schools), Savannah Hatt (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson), Claudia Lau (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Girls' School), Marina Nazario (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), Molly Schaefer (Orchard Lake, Mich./Marian), Michelle Stefandl (Princeton, N.J./Stuart Country Day School), and Alisa Zoltowski (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette). Boyd, Chen, Hathaway and Nazario are divers, while the rest are swimmers.

A Familiar Face ... This weekend, Michigan and Minnesota will meet to open the season for the third time in the last four years. The Golden Gophers have won the last two dual meetings by nearly the same score -- 169-130 on Oct. 8, 2008, and 169-131 on Oct. 8, 2010.
Intrasquad Recap ... The U-M men's and women's swimming and diving teams held their conjunctive intrasquad meet last Saturday (Oct. 1) inside Canham Natatorium. Individual event winners included Adrienne Bicek (5:00.50, 500-yard Freestyle), Alexa Mehesan (23.63, 50-yard Freestyle), Val Barthelemy (200-yard IM, 2:06.73), Ashley Cohagen (200-yard Backstroke, 2:03.51), Liz Koselka (200-yard Freestyle, 1:55.43), Caitlin Dauw (200-yard Butterfly, 2:04.14), and Julia Andracki (200-yard Breaststroke, 2:19.03). A Quick Peek Ahead ... The Wolverines will swim off against many familiar teams this season. The Wolverines will swim in 12 competitions this season, and all but one of those opponents was on the schedule last season (the lone exception is Florida Gulf-Coast on Jan. 2, 2012). Michigan is at home six times this season, facing Indiana twice (Oct. 28, Jan. 7), Toledo (Oct. 21), Texas (Oct. 28), Florida (Nov. 4-5), Stanford (Nov. 4-5), Northwestern (Jan. 14), Notre Dame (Jan. 14), and Michigan State (Jan. 27). Joining The Staff ... Former Wolverine Emily Hanson (2007-10) has joined the staff as the team's administrative assistant this season. Hanson was an NCAA All-American in 2007 as a freshman and an NCAA All-America honorable mention as a sophomore in 2008. She also swam at the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome, swimming in the 5k and 25k Open Water races.
Former Swimmer Brunemann Honored ... On Sept. 7, former U-M swimmer Emily Brunemann (2006-07, 2009-10) was named to the USA Swimming 2011-12 National Team, qualifying for the Open Water 10k. Brunemann won a national championship back in 2008 while wearing the Maize and Blue, and was a five-time NCAA All-American. [ Release ]
