PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior Adrienne Bicek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and freshman Marni Oldershaw (Oakville, Ontario/Iroquois Ridge) of the No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team were named Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced on Tuesday (Dec. 4). It is the first Big Ten weekly honor for both student-athletes.
Bicek swam four individual events at the Hawkeye Invitational, scoring three top-three finishes, including a win in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:13.51). She also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.28) and third in both the 400-yard individual medley (4:16.04) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.13), and she assisted in a win on the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:17.25). Bicek picked up three NCAA 'B' times on the weekend. Among Big Ten swimmers, she ranks second in the 1,650-yard freestyle, third in the 500-yard freestyle and seventh in the 400-yard individual medley.
Oldershaw picked up a pair of individual wins at the Hawkeye Invitational, taking first in both the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.25) and 400-yard individual medley (4:13.36). In addition, she placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.41) and third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.10). She also swam on the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team (7:17.25). Like Bicek, Oldershaw obtained three NCAA 'B' times on the weekend. Her time in the 200-yard individual medley is tops in the conference, and she ranks fourth in the 400-yard individual medley.
Michigan returns to the pool on Thursday, Jan. 3, when it wraps up its annual training trip with the Orange Bowl Classic in Key Largo, Fla. The meet will begin at 2 p.m.
