U-M Gains Singles, Doubles Wins at Day 2 of Michigan Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team picked up two doubles wins and three singles victories on the second day of competition at the Michigan Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 19) at the Varsity Tennis Center.

The Wolverines opened the day with two wins on the doubles court, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 against No. 20 Georgia Tech. Sophomore Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) and senior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) broke the GT duo to go up 5-4, staying on serve the rest of the way with for the 8-6 win.

After dropping a decision at No. 3, the U-M duo of freshman Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) and junior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) was victorious at No. 1 by an 8-7 score. With a rule change in doubles this season, a tiebreaker is now played at 7-7. The teams traded points to start before Michigan reeled off five straight to take match point at 6-1. Georgia Tech answered with four consecutive points before U-M took a 7-5 win in the breaker to win the match.

The Wolverines then transitioned to singles action against No. 43 South Florida. Lee picked up the Wolverines' first singles win of the afternoon, making quick work of No. 75-ranked Loreto Alonso at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0). Yurovsky was not far behind Lee, dispatching of USF's Danielle Mills in straight sets (6-2, 6-0) at the No. 2 position.

Sophomore Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) rounded out Michigan's singles wins, defeating Alessandra Bonte, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6. The Maize and Blue dropped the remaining three matches on court to finish 3-3 against the Bulls in singles.

The Wolverines are back on the court at the Varsity Tennis Center tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 20), playing Ole Miss in doubles at 11:30 a.m.
