ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team kicked off its dual-match season in impressive fashion, knocking off No. 54 Virginia Tech, 6-1, on Saturday (Jan. 25) in first-round action of ITA Kick-Off Weekend, held at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines took the early lead by winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The No. 2 pair of junior Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) and sophomore Amy Zhu (Newark, Del./Laurel Springs) were the first off court in doubles, breaking in the final game for a 6-4 win. The U-M duo went up a break at 4-3, but Virginia Tech answered with a win on Michigan's serve to knot the match at 4-4. Lee and Zhu took the next two games to seal the match, 6-4.
At No. 3, freshman Laura Ucros (Bogota, Colombia/Fundación Nuevo Marymount) and junior Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) jumped out to a 5-2 lead before hanging on for a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point for the Maize and Blue.
With a 1-0 lead entering singles, Michigan won consecutive singles matches at No. 1, No. 6 and No. 3 to secure the victory against the Hokies.
Junior Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) won the first singles match of the day, claiming a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Illnea Stoica at the top of the lineup to put U-M ahead, 2-0. Minutes later, Dodge rallied from a first-set deficit to down Carol Kahoun, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 6 position. Dodge fell behind 2-5 in the first set before winning 11 of the next 13 games to seal the victory and give the Wolverines a 3-0 advantage.
Senior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) clinched the match for Michigan with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kelly Williford at the No. 3 spot. After the match was already secured, the Wolverines won two of the final three matchups remaining on the court. Lee battled back from one set down to earn a 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 win over Francesca Fusinato at No. 2, and Zhu followed with a 6-2, 6-7 (7), 10-1 victory over Raluca Mita at No. 4.
Michigan looks to punch its ticket to its fifth straight National Team Indoor Championship tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 26) against Yale at 2 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
