CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped the doubles point in a tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot and lost the first three singles matches off court in a 4-0 loss to No. 7-ranked California in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Friday night (Feb. 8) at the Boar's Head Sports Club.

Michigan dropped the doubles point for the third straight match, losing matches at No. 1 and No. 2. Cal's No. 2 duo coasted to an 8-2 win at No. 2, before Michigan's No. 3 pair of senior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) and sophomore Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) evened the count with an 8-5 win. Nguyen and Zhu were down 5-4 before reeling off four straight wins for the 8-5 victory.

Needing a win at No. 1 to wrap up the point, Michigan's pair of junior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) and sophomore Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) jumped out to a 3-1 lead before falling behind, 6-5. The match went to a tiebreak at 7-7, with Cal winning the breaker for the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead.

Cal took singles decisions at No. 3 and No. 4 to push its lead to 3-0 and put the Golden Bears on the brink of winning the match. With Cal needing just one more point for the team victory, Michigan forced third sets in three matches left on court, while Nguyen remained in her second set.

Bektas fell into an early hole in her third set at No. 1, eventually dropping the third set, 6-1, to No. 7 Zsofi Susanyi as Cal wrapped up the team match by a 4-0 margin.

With the loss, Michigan is guaranteed two more matches in consolation play. U-M will play again tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 9) against host Virginia at 6:30 p.m.
