Bektas Breaks Singles Record in Michigan's Win over Texas

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Emina Bektas won her 113th career singles match to as the No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team defeated No. 35 Texas, 6-1, on Friday (Feb. 27) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Bektas is now alone in first place on Michigan's career wins list.

Before the match even started, Michigan took a 2-0 lead as Texas had to forfeit matches at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles courts. Texas only had four players available, also forcing a forfeit of the No. 3 doubles match.

In doubles play, Michigan did not surrender a game in a pair of 6-0 wins. The first victory came courtesy of Michigan's No. 2 pair of senior Sarah Lee and junior Ronit Yurovsky in about 20 minutes. The No. 1 duo of freshman Alex Najarian and senior Bektas followed a few minutes later with a 6-0 win of their own to push the Michigan advantage to 3-0.

Yurovsky clinched the match for Michigan with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1, putting the fourth point on the board for the Wolverines.

The record breaker for Bektas came by a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 2. Bektas fell down 4-1 in the first before ripping off five straight games to take the first. Bektas cruised in the second, 6-2, to break her tie with Brooke Bolender (2011-14) at the top of Michigan's career list.

Texas won the last match on court at No. 4 for its only point of the evening. Freshman Mira Ruder-Hook fought off a game point and then won the ad-point to win the second set, 7-5 to send the match to a 10-point tiebreaker. In the 10-point tiebreaker for the match, the freshman jumped out to a 9-1 lead but could not hang on in the 11-9 win for UT.

Next up for Michigan is its annual spring break trip. U-M will be heading to Hawaii for a week of outdoor hitting and a match against Hawai'i on Friday (March 6) at 3 p.m. HT.
