Wolverines Open Conference Play with Shutout of Spartans

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team opened Big Ten Conference play with a 4-0 sweep of in-state rival Michigan State Saturday afternoon (March 18) inside the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan improved to 6-0 at home this year and 91-6 in conference play under head coach Ronni Bernstein.

Michigan took the doubles point with wins at the top two courts. Sophomore Brienne Minor and junior Mira Ruder-Hook used two early breaks and a break at match point for the 6-2 win over Michigan State's Athena Trouillot and Samantha Memije.

A couple minutes later, the No. 2 ranked doubles team of sophomore Kate Fahey and junior Alex Najarian sealed a 6-1 win over Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen. Fahey and Najarian started the match by winning the first three games and improved their record to 21-2 on the year.

Fahey picked up the first win in singles, defeating Alsina Chua, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 1 spot. Fahey is now 22-5 on the season and 9-2 in dual-match play.

Ruder-Hook made it 3-0 Wolverines with a 6-2, 6-3 win over MSU's Athena Trouillot at No. 5 singles. Ruder-Hook has now won four singles matches in a row and is 12-5 on the season.

Minor clinched the match at No. 2 singles, defeating Emily Metcalf, 6-3, 6-3. The remaining three matches were abandoned after the fourth team point was clinched.

Michigan continues Big Ten action next weekend, first traveling to Indiana on Saturday (March 25). The match is set to start at 11 a.m.
