MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won its fifth consecutive match after dispatching of Wisconsin, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon (March 23) at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Michigan raced out to the early lead after winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots. At the top spot, the nation's No. 2 duo of sophomore Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) and junior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) breezed to an 8-1 win to put U-M on the brink of the match's first point. At No. 2, Michigan's No. 49-ranked pair of freshman Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum), and sophomore Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) clinched the point with an 8-5 victory.
With a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, Michigan won five-of-six first sets to take control of the match. Lee, ranked No. 80 nationally, wrapped up U-M's second point of the day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4. Bektas followed with a straight-set win of her own at No. 1, defeating Hannah Berner (6-2, 6-4) at the top of the lineup.
With U-M on the verge of the team victory, Bolender delivered a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3 as Michigan defeated the Badgers for the ninth straight time. With the team match in hand, the Wolverines won two of the remaining three matches on court to provide the 6-1 margin.
Michigan wraps up its weekend road trip tomorrow (Sunday, March 24) at Minnesota. Match time is slated for 11 a.m. CDT.
