Michigan Breezes Past Penn State in Big Ten Shutout Victory

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. --The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and dropped just one singles set while coasting to a 7-0 win over Penn State on Sunday afternoon (March 23) at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center. Michigan has won 13 in a row over PSU.

Michigan rolled to the doubles point, taking a pair of victories at Nos. 3 and 1. At No. 3, sophomore Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum)and freshman Laura Ucros (Bogota, Colombia/Fundación Nuevo Marymount) blanked Katia Blik and Taylor Shukow in an 8-0 win.

At the top doubles spot, junior Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) and senior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) jumped out to a 4-1 lead en route to an 8-3 decision to seal the match's first point.

Michigan's second point came quite quickly, as sophomore Amy Zhu's (Newark, Del./Laurel Springs) opponent defaulted at No. 4 after Zhu opened a 2-0 lead in the first set.

Bektas accounted for the Wolverines' third point of the contest, breezing to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dasha Sapogova at No. 1, and junior Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) clinched the match for the Wolverines with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 3.

With the dual match already in hand, junior Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) won a 10-point tiebreaker, 10-3, at No. 6 to push the Maize and Blue's advantage to 5-0.

Another default for Penn State at No. 5 gave Ucros the win, and Bolender closed out the shutout for the Wolverines, winning 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2.

Michigan will return to action on Friday (March 28), traveling to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes. The match is slated for a 3 p.m. CDT start.
