ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In its first Big Ten Conference match in a month, the No. 20-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team swept both the doubles and singles competition en route to a 7-0 shutout victory against Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon (March 24) at the Varsity Tennis Center. It was the Wolverines' fourth shutout decision of the season and second in as many Big Ten duals.

Michigan won handily in the first set of all six singles matches and claimed all six in straight sets. Junior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan HS) won especially quickly, dropping just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Sarah Loeber at the No. 4 position. Loeber broke Nguyen early in the second set to get on the board, but the Wolverine junior broke back immediately before taking three of the final four games to close out.

Sophomore Sam Critser (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View HS) earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Nova Patel to pick up her third straight win at the No. 5 position. The two players traded several breaks in the second set, including one late that put Patel back on serve at 5-4, but Critser responded quickly to break for the win.

Needing just one more win to clinch, Michigan earned three in quick succession from its freshman players. Freshman Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) earned the clinching point for the second straight dual -- and fifth time this season -- with a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Hannah Berner at No. 3. Neither held serve through the first six games of the first set, before Lee took control, reeling off three straight games to take the set. She maintained her momentum in the second, jumping to a 4-0 advantage before ultimately closing out the set on an unforced error into the net.

Freshman Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS) cruised past the Badgers' Aleksandra Markovic, 6-1, 6-2, in her return to the lineup at the No. 6 position, earning a sixth-game break in the second set and winning the final four games of the match.

Freshman Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels HS) defeated Alaina Trgovich, 6-2, 7-6 (7), to improve to 11-1 at the No. 1 position. After a lopsided first set, the two players remained on serve throughout the second to force the tiebreaker, where Bektas jumped out to a 5-0 advantage before letting Trgovich slip back in. Even at 7-7, the Wolverine newcomer notched back-to-back points to put the match away.

Sophomore Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan Prep) closed out the dual with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Nicky Stracar on the No. 2 court. Bolender never led in the second set, twice battling back from breaks, until the final game, earning the break and the match on an overhead to Stracar's feet.

The Wolverines followed a similar script to win on all three doubles courts, earning breaks to rally from early deficits before breaking again in the final game to close out the match. Bektas and Bolender secured their second straight win at the No. 1 position, defeating Trgovich and Berner, 8-4, as the first team off court. After evening the score at 3-3, the U-M duo broke in the eighth game to take their first advantage and finished the contest with a break game and Bolender's overhead into the opposite corner. They improved to a team-best 11-2 in dual-match action.

Nguyen and senior Michelle Sulahian (Valley Glen, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) ended the No. 2 match on a tear, breaking to go up 6-5 and winning the contest's final three games to close out a 8-5 win over Stracar and Patel. Critser and Lee rounded out the Wolverines' doubles victories, beating Markovic and Angela Chupa, 8-6, with a break in the 14th game.

Michigan will wrap up its four-match home stand tomorrow (Sunday, March 25), hosting Minnesota at noon at the Varsity Tennis Center.
