WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team swept the doubles competition and claimed four singles wins to earn a 5-2 victory at Purdue on Saturday afternoon (March 31) at the Boilermakers' Schwartz Tennis Center. The Wolverines extended their win streak to four straight matches and improved to 4-0 in Big Ten Conference play.

After opening the singles competition with a loss, the Wolverines reeled off four consecutive straight-set victories to seal the dual match. Freshman Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels HS) and sophomore Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan Prep) kickstarted the surge at the top of the lineup, earning lopsided victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively.

Bektas extended her singles winning streak to five in a row with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Jennifer Rabot, using early breaks to go up in both sets, while Bolender claimed her fourth consecutive win with a 6-1, 7-5 decision against Lynda Xepoleas. Bolender and Xepoleas traded breaks in the second, before the Wolverine closed it out with back-to-back games.

Sophomore Sam Critser (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View HS) clinched the dual match from the No. 5 position, battling to a 7-5, 6-4 win against the Boilermakers' Gisella Pere. After taking the final two games of the first set, Critser broke in the seventh game to take control in the second. She is 4-3 in singles play since returning from injury.

Like Critser, freshman Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) battled at the No. 3 spot, edging Mara Schmidt, 6-4, 7-6 (5), for her fourth straight singles win. On serve throughout most of the match, Lee used a late break to claim the first set and needed the tiebreaker to secure the second. She improved to a team-best 14-1 in dual-match competition.

Michigan claimed all three doubles matches for the fourth time this season and second time in three matches. After trading early breaks at the No. 1 position, Bektas and Bolender rolled past Rabot and Schmidt, claiming the final four games en route to an 8-3 decision. The Wolverine duo, ranked seventh nationally, improved to 12-3 in dual competition.

The Wolverines sealed the doubles point at the No. 2 spot, where junior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Milliken HS) and senior Michelle Sulahian (Valley Glen, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) secured their third consecutive win with an 8-5 decision over Xepoleas and Daniela Vidal. Critser and Lee also claimed their third straight doubles win at the No. 3 position, using a late break to beat Imogen Golder and Pere, 8-6.

The Wolverines will close out the weekend road trip tomorrow (Sunday, April 1), heading to Bloomington, Ind., to face Indiana at 11 a.m. at the Hoosiers' Tennis Center.
