ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team saw its eight-match winning streak come to an end in a 5-2 loss to Indiana on Sunday afternoon (March 31) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan's No. 1 duo of sophomore Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) and junior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) breezed to an 8-1 win as the first pair off court. U-M dropped an 8-2 decision at No. 3, with all attention turning to the No. 2 match.
Down 6-1 at No. 2, the Michigan pair of freshman Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) and sophomore Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) held on Lee's serve to cut the IU lead to 6-2. Michigan broke Indiana and held on its next serve as the IUlead shrunk to 6-4. The Wolverines held a break point in the ensuing game, but the Hoosiers ripped off three consecutive points to hold serve and thwart Michigan's rally in an eventual 8-4 win for the doubles point.
Bektas recorded the first point of the day for Michigan, taking a 6-1, 6-4 decision over No. 111 Leslie Hureau at the top spot. Freshman Amy Zhu (Newark, Del./Laurel Springs) provided the next point for Michigan, coasting to a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 as the Maize and Blue opened up a 2-1 lead on the Hoosiers.
Indiana answered with four straight singles wins for the team victory. After a straight-set win at No. 5 for the Hoosiers, all three of the remaining matches went to a third set. At No. 2, Yurovsky fought off two match points at 5-3 to get back on serve. The two players stayed on serve for the next two games, until Katie Klyczek broke Yurovsky for the 7-5 win and Indiana's third point.
The Hoosiers clinched the match with a three-set victory at No. 4 as both Lee and IU's Carolyn Chupa traded breaks in the final frame to enter a tiebreaker. Chupa jumped out to a 5-2 lead en route to the 7-4 breaker win to clinch the match for the Hoosiers.
Indiana finished the day with another three-set win, this one at No. 4 to provide the 5-2 margin.
Michigan hits the road next weekend, playing at Illinois on Saturday (April 6) and at Northwestern on Sunday (April 7). Both matches will start at noon CDT.
