BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team claimed its fifth straight dual-match victory, winning the doubles point and the first three singles matches off court en route to a 4-3 decision at Indiana on Sunday afternoon (April 1) at the Hoosiers' Tennis Center. With the victory, the Wolverines improved to 5-0 in Big Ten Conference play.

Michigan picked up decisive wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts to secure the initial point for the fourth straight dual match. Freshman Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels HS) and sophomore Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan Prep), ranked 11th in the latest ITA poll, cruised to an 8-1 decision against Sophie Garre and Katie Klyczek at the top spot, earning an early break before claiming each of the final seven games. The Wolverine duo improved to 13-3 in dual-match competition.

Junior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan HS) and senior Michelle Sulahian (Valley Glen, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) clinched the point from the No. 2 position, winning the last four games to defeat Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva, 8-4, for their fourth straight win. Nguyen and Sulahian are 10-3 in dual action.

The doubles point proved the difference in the match after the Wolverines started slow in singles play, dropping four first sets, and ultimately split the six matches. Nguyen and freshman Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) won quickly, however, at the No. 4 and No. 3 positions, respectively, to pad Michigan's advantage to 3-0.

Nguyen, ranked 114th nationally, rebounded from a disappointing singles loss yesterday (Saturday, March 31) with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory against the Hoosiers' Carolyn Chupa at No. 4. The Wolverine junior picked up her 20th win on his season and improved to 11-5 in dual play.

After battling to claim the first set against Katie Klyczek at the No. 3 position, Lee cruised in the second to complete a 7-5, 6-2 decision. Lee broke early in the second and claimed the last three games to improve to a team-best 15-1 in dual competition. Lee also boasts a team-leading 26-6 overall record.

With Michigan needing just one more win to clinch, freshman Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS) turned her match around on the No. 6 court, rallying to a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision against Fujimoto. Dodge, who picked up her second straight singles win with the performance, broke Fujimoto early in the third set to build a 4-1 advantage before holding serve to close out the match and seal the Wolverine win.

Indiana narrowed the final score with wins in the final three matches.

The Wolverines return home next weekend to host a pair of Big Ten duals at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M will face Illinois at noon on Saturday (March 7) before wrapping the weekend on Sunday (April 8) with a noon match against rival Northwestern.
