ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team recorded its eighth shutout of the season on Sunday afternoon (April 6), blanking Illinois, 7-0, at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match was played outdoors, Michigan's first outdoor match of the season at home.
Michigan started the match with the doubles point in hand after winning matches at No. 1 and No. 3. Senior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) and junior Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) rallied from a 4-1 deficit at No. 1 for an 8-4 victory, winning the final seven games of the match. With the win, Bolender is now the Michigan career leader in doubles wins with 115.
Michigan dropped an 8-3 decision at No. 2, making the match at No. 3 the decider of the match's first point. Junior Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) and sophomore Amy Zhu (Newark, Del./Laurel Springs) went up a break at 5-4, but Illinois broke right back to knot the match at 5-5. Both teams held serve until it was 7-7 to send the match to a seven-point breaker.
Zhu and Lee jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the breaker, but Illinois won the next two points to tie it up at 2-all. U-M never trailed in the tiebreaker and rattled off the last three points to sew up the doubles point for the Maize and Blue with a 7-4 tiebreaker win.
Michigan rolled in singles action, dropping just one set across the board. Lee provided the second point of the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 for a 2-0 U-M advantage.
Bektas rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Allison Falkin at No. 1 for the match's third point, with Bolender providing the clinching point at No. 3. Bolender knocked off Melissa Kopinksi in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, to put the match out of reach.
Sophomore Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) rallied after dropping the first set for a three-set win at No. 2 (4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (8)). She jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of the third set before hanging on for the 10-8 win.
Zhu finished her match moments later at No. 5, defeating Jericka Boone, 7-6 (3), 6-2, cruising in the second set after winning the first in a breaker.
Freshman Laura Ucros (Bogota, Colombia/Fundación Nuevo Marymount) followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 to keep the Wolverines perfect on the day.
