ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team claimed five-of-six singles matches, battling to take three in the three sets, and swept the doubles competition en route to a 6-1 decision at No. 17 Nebraska on Friday evening (April 13) at the NU Varsity Courts. The Wolverines improved to 7-1 in Big Ten Conference play to retake first place in the latest league standings.
With Michigan holding a 3-1 advantage in the dual after a pair of straight-set singles decisions, freshman Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) clinched with a major comeback effort on the No. 3 court, defeating Madeleine Geibert, 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3. The Wolverine freshman dropped the first set and trailed 5-2 in the second before winning three straight games to tie and force the eventual breaker, which she won 7-3. On serve through 3-3 in the third, Lee claimed the match's final three games to close out the win and improve to a team-leading 17-2 in dual action.
Lee's freshman classmates, Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels HS) and Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS), preceded her in victory from the No. 1 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Bektas, ranked No. 11 in the latest ITA singles poll, cruised past No. 43 Mary Weatherholt, 6-2, 6-2, while Dodge earned her third straight singles win with a 6-0, 7-6 (3) decision against Maike Zeppernick.
With the dual already determined, Michigan earned three-set victories from sophomore Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan Prep) and junior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan HS) at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively. Bolender, ranked 75th, knocked off Patricia Veresova, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, to claim her third straight win. The players traded the opening sets with similar late-game breaks, before Bolender took control early in the third and closed out with five straight games.
Nguyen rallied to win her fourth consecutive singles contest, battling past Stefanie Weinstein, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-0, in the dual's final match. Nguyen, ranked 114th, broke late to even the second set, which she claimed in the tiebreaker, and subsequently shut out Weinstein in the third.
The Wolverines claimed all three doubles matches for the fifth time this season and third in Big Ten play. Michigan's top duo of Bektas and Bolender clinched the point with a marathon 9-8 (8) win over No. 44-ranked Geibert and Weinstein for its third straight win over a ranked pairing. The two teams traded breaks early and again late to force the tiebreaker, where U-M rallied from a three-point deficit and eventually secured back-to-back points on its fourth match-point attempt. Bektas and Bolender, who moved up to No. 6 in the mostr-ecent ITA doubles poll, own a 6-5 record against ranked opposition.
The Wolverines (14-6, 7-1 Big Ten) will wrap up their weekend road swing on Sunday (April 15), traveling to Iowa City, Iowa, to face Iowa at 11 a.m. CDT at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
