ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Propelled by the doubles point and three straight wins to start singles, the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team defeated Iowa, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon (April 14) at the Varsity Tennis Center.

U-M won the match's first point, wrapping up the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. On serve through the first nine games, Michigan's No. 1 pair of junior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) and sophomore Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) broke Iowa to take a 6-4 lead. U-M won the next two games for the 8-4 win.

Michigan had early breaks on both remaining courts, holding commanding leads on both. With each court featuring a 7-3 U-M advantage, the No. 3 pair of freshman Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) and sophomore Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) finished off its opponent first to clinch the doubles point.

Switching over to singles, Yurovsky made quick work of Shelby Talcott at No. 2. The Wolverine freshman won the first set 6-0 and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second before hanging on for a 6-4 win in the second set for U-M's second point of the afternoon.

Freshman Amy Zhu (Newark, Del./Laurel Springs) accounted for the Maize and Blue's third tally of the afternoon, delivering a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5.

With Michigan on the brink, Bektas came through with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 1 over No. 98 Ruth Seaborne. Bektas broke Seaborne for a 6-5 advantage in both sets, serving out for the win in each for Michigan's deciding point.

Iowa put its first and only point on the board with a win at No. 6. Following that, Lee won in straight sets at No. 4 (6-3, 7-5), and Bolender rallied for a three-set victory (3-6, 6-2,6-3) at No. 3 to complete the 6-1 U-M win.
