ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team swept the doubles and took the first four singles off court to quickly clinch a 5-2 decision at Iowa on Sunday afternoon (April 15) at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. With the victory, head coach Ronni Bernstein claimed her 100th victory at Michigan as the Wolverines improved to 8-1 in Big Ten Conference play and, with only one regular-season weekend remaining, sit tied atop the league standings.
Michigan claimed all three doubles matches for the second time in as many matches, earning 8-2 decisions on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts before completing the sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 2. Freshman Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels HS) and sophomore Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan Prep), ranked sixth in the latest ITA poll, extended their win streak to six consecutive matches with their victory at the top spot, breaking the Hawkeyes' Morven McCulloch and Sonja Molnar Weinstein in the fifth game and winning each of the final seven to clinch the initial point.
The Wolverines gave up just eight combined games en route to straight-set decisions at the bottom four singles positions.
After earning a huge comeback win to clinch U-M's last dual victory, freshman Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) exited quickly against the Hawkeyes, rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Morven McCulloch at the No. 3 spot. Lee earned an early break in the first set and shut out the second to improve to a team-best 18-2 in dual competition this season. Junior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan HS), ranked 114th, finished just moments later at No. 4, winning the match's first nine games en route to a 6-0, 6-1 decision against Katie Zordani. Nyugen extended her win streak to five in a row.
