ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team swept the doubles competition and took four-of-six singles matches en route to a 5-2 rout at Penn State on Friday afternoon (April 20) at Sarni Tennis Center. It was the third straight win for the Wolverines, who improved to 9-1 in Big Ten Conference play to remain tied atop the league standings.
Michigan claimed three of the first four singles matches to clinch the dual match quickly. Sophomore Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan Prep), ranked 73rd in the latest ITA poll, cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Fernanda Perrotta at the No. 3 position.
Freshman Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS) and junior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan HS) extended their winning streaks at the No. 6 and No. 4 positions, respectively, to seal the Wolverine victory. Dodge took advantage to quick starts against Marie Bedard in the former, breaking early in both sets en route to a 6-1, 6-2 decision and her fourth straight singles win.
Nguyen clinched on the No. 4 court, earning her sixth straight win with a 6-4, 6-0 decision against Carmen Sandor. The Wolverine junior broke late, in the ninth game, in the first set before shutting out the second.
With the dual already decided, the two teams traded the final two matches, at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, in the match tiebreaker. Freshman Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels HS) battled past 76th-ranked Petra Januskova, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (7), for her 14th win over a ranked opponent this season.
Michigan swept the doubles competition for the third consecutive dual match, earning quick lopsided wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts to clinch the point before rounding out play with an 8-6 win at the No. 3 spot. On serve through 1-1 at the top spot, Bektas and Bolender surged to their seventh straight doubles win, claiming the final seven games to cruise past the Nittany Lions' Chelsea Utting and Fernanda Perrotta, 8-1. U-M's other two doubles pairings boast similar three-match winning streaks.
The Wolverines will play for their third straight Big Ten title on Sunday (April 22), wrapping up the regular season with a noon match against rival Ohio State at the Varsity Tennis Center.
