ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team battled to a 4-2 victory over Indiana in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon (April 27) at Ohio State's Varsity Tennis Courts. Michigan won the doubles point and three of the first five singles matches off court for the win.
Freshman Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels HS), the 2012 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, clinched the dual from the No. 1 position, where she avenged a regular-season loss with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 decision against No. 71-ranked Leslie Hureau. Bektas, ranked 12th in the latest ITA poll, rallied from an early deficit to take the first set, before Hureau responded in kind to claim the second. The Wolverine rookie broke midway through the third set and claimed four of the final five games to close out the match. She improved to 18-4 in dual-match action.
Sophomore Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan Prep) also avenged a season loss and did so quickly, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Evgeniya Verteseva on the No. 2 court. Bolender, ranked 85th, earned immediate breaks to roll in both sets. Like Betkas, she extended her win streak to three.
Freshman Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) rounded out Michigan's singles victors with a 6-4, 6-1 decision against Katie Klyczek at the No. 3 position. Lee lost an early advantage in the first set when Klyczek broke late to even the score at 4-4, but the Wolverine tookie responded with back-to-back games to claim the set. She rallied the momentum into the second, surging to a 4-0 lead before breaking again late to wrap up her 20th dual win of the season.
Indiana kept the score close with singles wins on the No. 5 and No. 6 courts. Junior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan HS), who did not start play until the first match was over, won the first set at No. 4 and was leading 2-0 in the second when Bektas clinched and her match was abandoned.
The Wolverines claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Bektas and Bolender extended their win streak to nine in a row at the top spot, cruising to an 8-2 rout against Hureau and Sophie Garre. The 10th-ranked duo is 20-3 in dual-match play this season.
