IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and three of the first four singles matches to defeat Wisconsin, 4-1, in quarterfinal action at the Big Ten Tournament on Friday (April 30) at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.

U-M won the doubles point to start the match, taking two of three from Wisconsin to head into singles with the one-point advantage. At No. 1, the No. 23 duo of junior Whitney Taney (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Rika Tatsuno (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) took a quick 8-2 decision. Wisconsin grabbed a win at No. 2, but U-M's No. 3 pair of senior Tania Mahtani (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) and junior Denise Muresan (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) clinched the point with a 9-7 victory.

Taney was the first Wolverine off court with a win at No. 2 to put the Wolverines on top, 2-0. Freshman Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) suffered her first loss since Feb. 15, falling at No. 3 to put the Badgers on the board. Sophomore Michelle Sulahian (Valley Glen, Calif./Campbell Hall School) rebounded from a first-set loss to win at No. 6, setting the Wolverines up for the win.

Tatsuno clinched the match at No. 4, brushing off a first-set tiebreaker loss to Angela Chupa. Tatsuno won the next two sets by identical 6-3 scores, giving Michigan its 15th consecutive win.

The Wolverines now advance to the semifinal round where they will take on fourth-seeded Iowa tomorrow (Saturday, May 1) at 10 a.m. CDT.

• The match was played indoors due to high winds and storms in the area.

• Michigan is the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Wisconsin was the No. 8 seed.

• Matches in progress when the dual match is clinched are abandoned during postseason play.

• U-M defeated Wisconsin, 6-1, earlier this season in Madison (April 4).

• The Wolverines won the doubles point for the 23rd time this season.

• U-M tied the program record for wins in a season with 21. The 1997 team went 21-5.

Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno have won 13 doubles matches in a row.

• The Wolverines will face host Iowa tomorrow (Saturday, May 1). U-M defeated Iowa, 6-1, earlier this season on March 27.
