ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team wrapped up action at the Wolverine Invitational, winning two doubles matches and one singles match on Sunday (Sept. 23) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The teams once again started with doubles inside due to chilly morning temperatures. U-M captured two of its doubles matches, with junior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) and senior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) teaming up for an 8-0 triumph over Arizona State's Desirae Krawczyk and Stephanie Vlad. Freshmen Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) and Amy Zhu (Newark, Del./Laurel Springs) captured U-M's other victory, rallying from a 3-0 deficit for an 8-6 win over Hannah James and Joanna Smith of Arizona State.
Singles began outside, but rain forced action back indoors to conclude the day. With Michigan taking on defending national champion Florida, sophomore Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) captured the only singles victory of the day for the Wolverines. Lee, who is ranked No. 125, knocked off No. 49 Alexandra Cercone in straight sets (6-4, 6-3).
Florida's Danielle Collins and Olivia Janowicz won the doubles title, while Georgia's Maho Kowase and Lauren Herring shared the singles crown after three days of action.
Bolender and sophomore Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) will compete in the ITA All-American, Oct. 2-7, in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The pair will be in action in the main draw of the doubles competition, with Bektas in the singles main draw and Bolender in the qualifying singles draw.
