ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Two members of the University of Michigan women's tennis team were in action in the singles qualifying draw on the first day of competition of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Thursday (Oct. 10) at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Freshmen Annie Wierda (Holland, Mich./Evert Tennis Academy) and Sara Remynse (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) each won a match in the draw, with Remynse still alive for a berth into the main draw.

Wierda won her first-round match, knocking off Mila Shustova of IPFW, 6-1, 6-1. Her tournament run came to an end to against Nikki Chiricosta (Bowling Green) in the second round, 7-6 (2), 6-3.

Remynse entered the draw with a first-round bye and then coasted to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Eastern Michigan's Daphne Friedrichs in the second round.

Remynse will play tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 11) against Meika Ashby of Western Michigan at 9 a.m. for a berth in the singles main draw. The doubles main draw starts tomorrow at 2 p.m., with the first two rounds taking place.
