ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) defeated junior Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) in the singles final of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships as the University of Michigan women's tennis team completed the six-day tournament on Monday morning (Oct. 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Yurovsky scored the three-set win (6-1, 1-6, 6-3) to secure her berth to the ITA National Indoor Championships, Nov. 7-10, in Flushing, N.Y.
Yurovsky won the first set, taking advantage of an early break of Bektas en route to a 6-1 win. Yurovsky broke Bektas in her first service game, jumping out to the 2-0 advantage.
It was the other way around in the second set as Bektas broke Yurovsky early for an identical 6-1 ledger. Coming down to the third and final set, Bektas jumped out to a 2-0 lead with another early break of Yurovsky. However, Yurovsky fought back, winning five straight games for a 5-2 lead. Bektas held on her serve, but Yurovsky served out the match in the ensuing game for the three-set win.
Michigan will split up in its next action of the fall season, sending participants to the adidas Invitational in Beaverton, Ore., and to the Roberta Allison in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Both tournaments run Nov. 1-3.
