Bolender Advances to Shootout at USTA Collegiate Invitational

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Junior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) advanced to the shootout round as the University of Michigan women's tennis team completed action at the USTA Collegiate Invitational on Sunday (Nov. 4) at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.

Bolender dropped her first singles match on Friday (Nov. 2) to the USTA's Dasha Ivanova (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) before bouncing back for straight-set wins over Anna Mamalat of Texas A&M (6-0, 6-4) and UCLA's Catherine Harrison (7-5, 6-2). With her 2-1 round-robin record, Bolender earned a spot in the adidas shootout with a wild-card entry to a 2013 pro circuit tournament on the line.

Matched up against Brooke Austin of the USTA in the quarterfinal round of the shootout, the Wolverine captain fell in the 10-point tiebreaker, 10-3.

Bolender teamed with sophomore Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) in the doubles portion of the tournament as the Wolverine duo advanced to the finals before falling to Kyle McPhillips and Skylar Morton of UCLA, 9-7. The Michigan pair knocked off opponents from Portland (8-1), the USTA (8-4) and Georgia (8-6) to reach the final match.

Bektas also finished with a 2-1 singles mark on the weekend, knocking off Julija Lukac of Washington (6-1, 6-4) and Kelsey Frey of Portland (6-1, 6-1) after dropping her first match on Friday.

Michigan is back in action next weekend (Fri-Sun., Nov. 9-11), sending senior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan), junior Sam Critser (Mountainview, Calif./Mountainview), sophomore Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and freshman Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) to the ASU Thunderbird.
