PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior Denise Muresan (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) of the University of Michigan women's tennis team was named Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Jan. 18) after winning the singles title at the Michigan Invitational (Jan. 15-17). It is the first time this season and the second time in her career she has earned the distinction.
Muresan, ranked No. 11 in the first ITA rankings of the 2011 season, went 3-0 at the Michigan Invitational at the top of the U-M lineup to take the singles crown. The 2010 All-American started the weekend with a win over No. 6 Denise Dy of Washington (6-0, 7-5). She then knocked off No. 39 Jillian O'Neill of Georgia Tech (7-6, 6-2) before capping her perfect weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Tennessee's Natalie Pluskota.
Muresan, the 2010 Big Ten Athlete of the Year, compiled a 13-4 record during tournament play, advancing to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Indoor Collegiate Championships in October and bringing her career record to 90-39. She needs just 15 more wins to become the program leader in career wins.
The No. 8-ranked Wolverines play host to Western Michigan on Sunday (Jan. 23) to kick off the dual-match season. Doubles are slated for a noon start at the Varsity Tennis Center.
