PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- After going 3-0 in both singles and doubles at the Michigan Invitational (Jan. 18-20), senior Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) of the University of Michigan women's tennis team was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Wednesday (Jan. 23). It is the first time in her career she has won the weekly honor.
Lee teamed up with senior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) to win the doubles title at the Michigan Invitational after going 3-0 at the No. 2 doubles position against teams from No. 18 Ole Miss, No. 20 Georgia Tech and No. 43 South Florida.
On the singles court, Lee was one of three Wolverines to go undefeated at 3-0. To start the weekend, the sophomore defeated Mississippi's Marija Milutinovic (6-4, 3-6, 7-5) after battling back from a 3-0 deficit in the third. Lee then knocked off No. 75 Loreto Alonso of South Florida in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) before finishing the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alex Anghelescu of Georgia Tech.
The Wolverines kick off dual-match action this weekend (Sat-Sun., Jan. 26-27), hosting the ITA Kick-Off Event at the Varsity Tennis Center. Joining Michigan at the VTC are No. 32 South Carolina, No. 52 Missouri and No. 64 Brown, with a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on the line. Michigan will play Brown on Saturday at 10 a.m. and either USC or Missouri Sunday.
