PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- After extending her singles win streak at last weekend's ITA National Indoor Championships, freshman Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels HS) of the University of Michigan women's tennis team was named Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday (Feb. 14). Betkas has garnered four weekly accolades this season, including three of the last five citations.
The Wolverine rookie went 2-0 from the No. 1 singles position and 3-0 at No. 1 doubles at the prestigious ITA event. In her final match of the weekend, Bektas knocked off Georgia's No. 2-ranked Chelsey Gullickson, 6-2, 7-5, behind an early break in the first set and late break in the second. With the performance, she avenged an earlier-season loss to Gullickson, the 2010 NCAA singles champion and a three-time All-American, and extended her win streak to 10 straight matches. Bektas, ranked 36th nationally, also earned a singles win over Clemson's Beatrice Gumulya, 6-2, 6-1.
Bektas teamed with sophomore Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan Prep) to claim a 3-0 mark at the No. 1 doubles position and extend their win streak to four matches. After earning lopsided 8-3 decisions against the top teams from Clemson and Duke, the Wolverine duo capped the weekend with an 8-5 victory over Georgia's pairing of Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist, the nation's No. 2 doubles team.
The Wolverines will take a weekend off before kicking off their Big Ten schedule against intrastate rival Michigan State on Wednesday (Feb. 22) in East Lansing, Mich. The dual match is slated for a 3 p.m. start at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
