Bektas Recognized as Big Ten Athlete of the Week

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- After helping the University of Michigan women's tennis team to a 5-2 win over No. 14-ranked Texas on Sunday (Feb. 24), sophomore Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) was named the Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week on Wednesday (Feb. 27). It is her first weekly honor of the season and fifth of her career.

Bektas, currently ranked No. 41 by the ITA, clinched Michigan's win over Texas by delivering a 6-1, 7-5 win over No. 29 Aeriel Ellis at the top position. Bolender also teamed with junior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) for an 8-2 victory over No. 24 Breaunna Addison and Noel Scott at the No. 1 doubles position as U-M swept all three matches from the Longhorns.

Bektas is the third Wolverine to earn the weekly honor this season, joining freshman Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) and sophomore Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall).

No. 13 Michigan is in action twice this week, hosting Michigan State on Wednesday (Feb. 27) at 3:30 p.m. and wrapping up a four-match homestand on Friday (March 1) against No. 2 Duke at 6 p.m.
