March 10, 2010

Every other week during the 2010 season, junior captain Whitney Taney will give you an insider look into the women's tennis team.

Hello! We just returned from an awesome spring break in Southern California, and when we got back to campus we were surprised with the warm weather in Ann Arbor! The weather in Cali was very pleasant, around 70 degrees and sunny pretty much every day. Luckily for us, the day we left rain started to creep in. At the airport, Rika said that California was crying because we were leaving!

We had a successful trip, beating both Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine. We definitely had the most fans at both the matches, but that's because half our team is from Southern California! We had a lot fun spending time with all the families and visiting Michelle, Tania and Rika's hometowns.

On Sunday night, we started the trip off with a bang with the entire team and all the LA families going over to the Sulahian's for a delicious barbeque. We stuffed ourselves to the point where nobody could get themselves up from their chairs! On Tuesday, we practiced at the Kramer Club (Jack Kramer) in Ranchos Palos Verdes, which is where Rika and Tania grew up playing.

Following the practice we had another delicious barbeque (and about 10 different desserts) right at the club with all the families. It was great seeing all of you, and most importantly, thank you for all the awesome food. We are going to do our best to burn off all those extra calories during this week's practice!

Outside of tennis we found a few new obsessions. The first was our addiction to yogurt/ice cream. We made a number of stops at the renowned Pinkberry and also hit up Marble Slab and Malibu Yogurt & Ice Cream.

Our second obsession was watching Mimi's four-year-old brother, Andy, do his victory dance. After we won our matches and were singing the fight song as a team, he would stand in the middle of our circle and start swinging his hips around. I think he was channeling Shakira. Teryn has a video of this, so it should be up on the team Facebook page soon!

We also spent a good amount of time shopping and watching movies. We first went to the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica and then The Grove, which was in Beverly Hills. They were amazing and fun places to shop at! Lastly, at nighttime we watched movies at the hotel. I finally had the chance to watch Twilight (which every girl on the team is obsessed with), and I will admit it was very good and I am ready to take on the others.

As of now, we are all glowing with tans (except me) and are going to be practicing hard to get ourselves ready for our next match and FIRST conference match against Michigan State (March 20). Also, you can check out some pictures of our spring break at the Sulahian's house on our Facebook page (search Michigan women's tennis). As always, Go Blue!
