ROSEMONT, Ill. -- After helping the University of Michigan women's tennis team to a pair of 7-0 victories last week and running her singles winning streak to 12 matches, junior Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon (March 11).
Bektas, who is now ranked No. 7 by the ITA, knocked off two straight ranked foes in Michigan's wins at UNLV (March 5) and No. 24 Texas (March 8). Against UNLV, Bektas defeated No. 46 Lucia Batta in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). Bektas picked up her 12th straight win in Michigan's triumph at Texas, defeating No. 16 Breaunna Addison, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (10), 1-0 (9). Bektas is 10-0 at the top singles spot in dual-match action and has not lost since the fall season.
This marks the ninth time in her career and third time this season that Bektas has won the weekly award. She already ranks 13th all-time at Michigan in singles victories with 82.
The No. 13-ranked Wolverines returns to action on Friday (March 14), hosting No. 5 Virginia at the Varsity Tennis Center. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m.
