PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- After helping the University of Michigan women's tennis team to wins over Illinois and No. 14 Northwestern last weekend (April 6-7), sophomore Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) was named the Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week on Wednesday (April 10). It is her second weekly award of the season and sixth of her career.
Bektas ran her singles winning streak to 11 matches with a pair of wins over the weekend. She knocked off Allison Falkin of Illinois on Saturday (April 6) in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) before defeating Northwestern's No. 96-ranked Veronica Corning on Sunday (April 7), 6-2, 6-4. Bektas is the only Wolverine still undefeated in Big Ten action, boasting a 7-0 record. She has not lost since falling to No. 5 Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar of Texas A&M on Feb. 16.
The Wolverine sophomore also paired with junior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) for two more doubles wins at the top position. Michigan's duo defeated No. 21 Melissa Kopinski and Rachael White of Illinois, 8-6. The next day against Northwestern, the Michigan pair racked up another win, this time against No. 9 Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton, 8-6.
Michigan (15-4, 6-1 Big Ten) is back in action this weekend, hosting No. 12 Nebraska on Saturday (April 13) and Iowa on Sunday (April 14). Both matches will start at 11 a.m.
