ROSEMONT, Ill. -- After helping the University of Michigan women's tennis team to its fifth straight Big Ten championship, junior Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (April 22). It is her fourth honor this season and the 10th of her career.
Bektas picked up a pair of singles wins at the No. 1 position over the weekend, finishing the Big Ten slate with a 10-1 mark at the top spot. She knocked off Indiana's Katie Klyczek in two sets (6-2, 6-0) on Saturday (April 19) and Purdue's Mara Schmidt in straight sets (6-4, 6-0) on Sunday (April 20). Bektas, who is ranked 10th nationally, carries a 20-2 record in dual matches at the top of the lineup and a 34-6 overall singles record. Her 34 wins is the second-best total in U-M history, and she is one away from tying senior Brooke Bolender's (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) record of 35 wins in a season.
Bektas teamed up with Bolender for a doubles win at the No. 1 spot against Purdue, knocking off Schmidt and Tess Bernarnd-Feigenbaum, 8-3, to clinch the doubles point for Michigan.
Michigan has won the last five Big Ten championships and recorded its first 11-0 Big Ten season in program history this season. U-M outscored its conference opponents 69-8 and shut out six teams en route to its sixth title in program history.
U-M is the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament and received a bye into quarterfinal action. The Wolverines will take on the winner of Michigan State and Iowa on Friday (April 25) at 10 a.m. CDT. The event is being held in Evanston, Ill.
