SKILLMAN, N.J. -- For the third straight season, the University of Michigan women's tennis team has been selected to host an ITA Kick-Off Event, the ITA announced Wednesday (June 6). The two-day event will run Jan. 26-27, 2013, at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Joining No. 1 seed U-M at the VTC will be No. 2 South Carolina, No. 3 Missouri and No. 4 Brown. The No. 1 team at each site will face the No. 4 team, with the No. 2 team squaring off against the No. 3 team. Two matches are guaranteed, as the winners and losers of both matches will play the following day. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, Feb. 8-11, at the Boar's Head Sports Club at the University of Virginia.
Michigan has never before played Brown or Missourin in dual-match competition and owns a 3-3 series record against South Carolina. U-M has claimed the two most recent meetings against the Gamecocks, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round in 2012, including a 4-3 decision at the 2010 ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
The Maize and Blue has advanced to the past three ITA Indoor Championships, going 5-4 at the event during that span. In 2012, U-M knocked off then-No. 15 Clemson (40) before falling to No. 3 Duke (4-0) and No. 6 Georgia (5-2).
The Wolverines, who captured their third straight Big Ten title this season, is coming off a 21-8 campaign in 2012 and ended the season ranked No. 14.
