EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- University of Michigan women's tennis team junior Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) won the singles title and teamed up with senior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) for the doubles crown at the Women's Hospital Classic, a USTA Pro Circuit Tournament that ran from July 15-21.
Bektas upended top-seeded Brooke Austin in the singles final on Sunday (July 21), rallying from a first-set loss (6-4) to win the final two frames (6-4, 6-3). It was her only three-set match of the tournament, as she knocked off her previous four opponents in straight sets.
In the opening round, the Wolverine junior defeated seventh-seeded Mari Osaka (6-4, 6-3) before defeating Victoria Lozano (6-2, 6-3) in the second round. A 6-2, 6-2 dispatching of Nyla Beenk in the quarterfinals set up a semifinal match between former Wolverine Denise Muresan (2008-11) in the semifinals. Bektas knocked off Muresan, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the finals. Bektas earned a wild card entrance into the tournament, one of three awarded for the event.
Bolender and Bektas secured a wild card for the doubles tourney, notching four straight wins for the title. The U-M pair, which earned All-America honors this past season as a duo, defeated top-seeded Zoe Gwen Scandalis and Blair Shankle in the first round (7-5, 6-3). Two more straight-set wins sent the pair to the final for a match-up with Muresan and Jacquline Wu. Bolender and Bektas stayed on a roll, winning the final 6-4, 6-4 for the tournament title.
