ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team kicks off the fall season this weekend Friday-Sunday (Sept. 21-23) by hosting the Wolverine Invitational. Joining U-M at the Varsity Tennis Center are Arizona State, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Utah and Western Michigan. Play begins on Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m., with Sunday's action starting at 9 a.m.

FORMAT OF PLAY
Each team will play three rounds of singles and three rounds of doubles. There will be up to eight flights in singles and four flights in doubles per match-up. Points will be allotted for each win based on the following decreasing point value to determine the champion (singles and doubles) at the end of the weekend.

Win at No. 2 position -- 7 points

Win at No. 5 position -- 4 points

Starting 2012-13 -- The Wolverines start the 2012-13 season at home, hosting a fall tournament for the first time since 2010. After this weekend, the Maize and Blue will spend the rest of the 2012 calendar year on the road. Michigan will compete in California, Alabama, Illinois, Oregon, Arizona and possibly New York during the remainder of the fall schedule. U-M will next be in action at home when it hosts the Michigan Invitational with Georgia Tech, Ole Miss and South Florida, Jan. 19-21, 2013.
Solid Competition at the VTC -- U-M will welcome some of the best teams in the country to the Varsity Tennis Center this weekend in Florida, Georgia, Utah, Arizona State, Iowa and Western Michigan. Florida is the defending national champion and ended the 2012 season ranked No. 1. Joining the Gators in the top 10 to end the year was Georgia (No. 6), with Utah (No. 34) and Arizona State (No. 38) earning a spot on the year-end rankings. There will be 12 ranked singles players in action this weekend, in addition to six ranked doubles teams.
Bolender Named Captain -- Junior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) was voted by her teammates to serve as captain for the 2012-13 season. Bolender was the 2011 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, has earned Big Ten honors in both seasons and teamed with former Wolverine Denise Muresan (2008-11) to earn All-America honors in doubles as a freshman.
Where We Rank -- In the first edition of the ITA rankings for 2012-13, Michigan had four players earn a singles ranking, along with a doubles team. Sophomore Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) leads the way with a No. 9 singles ranking for the fall season. Brooke Bolender checks in at No. 58, senior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) is No. 100 and sophomore Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) rounds out the list at No. 125. Competing at the All-American -- Michigan will send two participants to the 2012 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Brooke Bolender and Emina Bektas. Bektas will compete in the main draw of singles, while Bolender earned a spot in the qualifying draw. The duo will team up in the doubles main draw as well. The Riviera/ITA All-American Championships are slated for Oct. 2-7 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
New Faces -- Michigan has a pair of freshmen on this year's roster in Amy Zhu (Newark, Del./Laurel Springs) and Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum). Zhu joined the team in January but did not compete during the 2012 season and will retain freshman eligibility. Yurovsky is a blue chip recruit and was named NHSCA National High School Senior Athlete of the Year for girls tennis to end her high school career.
Bernstein Enters Sixth Season -- Head coach Ronni Bernstein enters her sixth season as head coach in 2012-13, carrying a 106-31 record in Ann Arbor. U-M has won three consecutive Big Ten championships (2010-12) and made three straight NCAA Sweet 16 appearances during that span. A three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year honoree, she has coached three Wolverines to five All-America honors.
