ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's tennis head coach Ronni Bernstein announced the signing of blue chip recruit Chiara Lommer to a National Letter of Intent on Thursday (Nov. 12).
"We are really excited to add Chiara," Bernstein said. "She is a lefty who just goes out there and competes all the time. I think she is going to fit in well with our team because she works so hard and is a great competitor."
Lommer, who hails from Skokie, Illinois, is currently ranked as the No. 20 senior in the country and the No. 1 recruit from the Chicago area. She has been ranked as high as No. 10 nationally in her class throughout her high school career.
She was an ITF doubles winner in Guatemala at the Copa Universidad Galileo this past March. Lommer also reached the finals of the Sanchez-Casal Junior Cup in Barcelona, an ITF G4 event, in October. The lefty also reached the semifinals of the Panama Bowl in March. At the end of last winter, Lommer made a run to the finals of the USTA National Winter Championships singles final before dropping a three-set match in the final.
Michigan loses senior Ronit Yurovsky to graduation after this season. The Wolverines are wrapping up the fall season this weekend at the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships (Nov. 12-15) and the ASU Thunderbird (Nov. 13-15).
