SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Fifth-year senior Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) and sophomore Cindy Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Huron) led the 18th-ranked University of Michigan women's track and field team to an impressive showing at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 8) inside the Loftus Center. Tobel won the pole vault, and Ofili claimed titles in the 60m hurdles and 200m dash to go along with a second-place finish in the 60m dash. The Wolverines won three individual events, had two runner-up performances and had four additional top-five performances.
Tobel won the pole vault by clearing 4.20 meters (13 feet, 9.25 inches). It was her second victory of the season after opening the indoor season by breaking her Michigan school record in the pole vault at the annual Simmons-Harvey Invitational.
Ofili started her impressive day by winning the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.25 seconds. Her time was three one hundredths off her personal-best time of 8.22 seconds recorded at the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Feb. 22, 2013. In the 60m dash, Ofili was edged out at the finish by Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Simbi Laaro for the victory. Both runners clocked times of 7.49 seconds.
Ofili came back in the 200m dash to take top honors with a time of 24.02 seconds. Senior Erin Busbee (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood) registered a career-best time of 24.91 seconds to finish in fifth place in the sprint.
In the 400m dash, sophomore Maya Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) placed fifth with a time of 55.48 seconds.
Freshman Jaimie Phelan (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) was the runner-up in the 800m dash with a personal-best time of 2:08.10 seconds. Phelan was two-tenths of a second behind Purdue’s Kari Shoolbraid for the title (2:07.10). Sophomore Danielle Pfeifer (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) finished eighth (2:10.55), followed by freshman Jamie Morrissey (Rochester, Mich./Rochester Adams) in 11th place with a personal-best time of 2:11.53. Junior/sophomore Devon Hoppe (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) finished 14th with a time of 2:12.11 to round out Michigan's four placers in the top 15.
