RALEIGH, N.C. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team kicked off the 2014 outdoor season on Friday (March 28) by competing at the Raleigh Relays at the Paul Derr Track and Field facility. Members of the squad were also in action at the North Florida Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla.
Junior Brook Handler (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) highlighted action in Raleigh, winning the overall title in the invitational sections of the 1,500-meter run with a personal-best time of 4:18.26 in a field of 64 runners. Handler was one of five Wolverines to finish in the top 20 overall in the invitational sections. In her collegiate outdoor debut, freshman Erin Finn (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) placed 12th in a time of 4:29.04, while senior Megan Weschler (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) finished on her heels in 4:29.88 to take 13th overall. Senior Alex Leptich (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) (4:30.99) and sophomore Danielle Pfeifer (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) (4:32.31) rounded out the top-20 finishes, securing the 16th and 19th fastest times clocked overall, respectively. Finn, Weschler and Leptich each joined Handler in the fourth and fastest heat, in which they finished 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively.
Freshman Gina Sereno (Madison, Wis./West) opened the Raleigh Relays by winning section C of the 5,000-meter run in a time of 17:06.04 in her collegiate track and field debut.
A small group of Wolverine harriers will be back in action tomorrow (Saturday, March 29) on the final day at the Raleigh Relays, competing in the 800-meter run and 4x800-meter relay.
