JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team kicked off the 2014 outdoor season on Friday (March 28), competing at the North Florida Invitational inside Hodges Stadium. Members of the team were action in action at the Raleigh Relays, as U-M split its squad for the opening weekend.
Michigan's throwing contingent opened the season with a strong showing that included three personal records and a win in the shot put.
Senior/junior Elly Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) claimed the shot put title with her personal-best throw of 13.55 meters (44-5.50). Fifth-year senior Joanna Fleming (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) and junior Amanda Adwon (Tulsa, Okla./Holland Hall)also opened the season recording new personal bests in the hammer throw to finish fourth and fifth, respectively. Fleming made her mark at 53.72 meters (176-3), while Adwon was right behind her at 51.83 meters (170-0), which was a 13-foot personal record. Mioduszewski also made her collegiate debut in the hammer throw and returned later in the evening to finish fifth in the javelin with a throw of 34.68 meters (113-9).
Fifth-year senior Sara Nitz (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East) and freshman Aaron Howell (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington) secured the top two spots in the high jump after clearing heights of 1.67 meters (5-5.75) and 1.62 meters (5-3.75), respectively.
Sophomore Cindy Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Huron), the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Athlete of the Year, opened the outdoor season with a runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.29.
In the 100-meter hurdle prelims, senior Erin Busbee (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood)clocked a time of 14.09 to place fourth overall, while in her collegiate outdoor debut, freshman Sami Michell (Reed City, Mich./(Reed City) ran 14.26 to take sixth. Michigan returned later in the afternoon to finish runner up in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:02.83. Busbee and Michell will each represent Michigan in the 100-meter hurdle finals tomorrow
In the pole vault, fifth-year senior Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) and junior Victoria Wesley (Marine City, Mich./Marine City) finished second and third, respectively, after clearing heights of 3.79 meters (12-5.25) and 3.64 meters (11-11.25). Junior Meghan Lark (Livonia, Mich./Franklin) also secured a top-five finish (fifth) with her vault of 3.49 meters (11-5.25).
Busbee and Michell will be the only two Wolverines in action tomorrow (Saturday, March 29) on the final day of the North Florida Invitational. Action will resume at 9:30 a.m., while the duo will compete in the 100-meter hurdle finals at 12:15 p.m.
