AZUSA, Calif. -- Competing in her first heptathlon, freshman Aaron Howell (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington) of the University of Michigan women's track and field team currently sits third among 50 competitors at the California Invitational, which started Wednesday (April 16) at Azusa Pacific University. Howell finished the first day of competition with 3,294 points and trails leader Moe Sasegbon (3,317) by 23 points.
Competing in the "Invite A" section, Howell set personal bests in each of the four events competed during the first day of competition. She will continue competition and look to capture her first career victory in the heptathlon on Thursday (April 17) starting at 11:30 a.m. PT.
Howell won her heat in the 100 meter hurdles and finished 10th overall with a career-best time of 14.64 seconds. She followed up the hurdles performance with a strong showing in the high jump, placing second in her group and tied for second overall by clearing 1.75 meters.
Howell won the shot put with a toss of 12.69 meters and finished out the first day of competition by placing 19th in the 200 meter dash (26.19 seconds).
