WALNUT, Calif. -- Freshman Erin Finn (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) snapped a 29-year-old school record in the outdoor 5,000-meter run to pace the University of Michigan women's track and field team on its final day at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday (April 18) at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
In her first time running in a collegiate 5,000-meter race, Finn qualified to compete in the Invite Elite section, where she finished the event in a time of 15:41.35. The previous school record of 15:42.70 was set by Sue Schroeder in 1985.
It also marked the collegiate debut at 5,000 meters for junior Brook Handler (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester), who participated in the Olympic Development Elite section, finishing runner up in a time of 16:04.99.
Michigan had three runners finish in the top 10 of the Open B 5,000-meter run. It marked the first collegiate outdoor 5,000-meter run for seniors Alex Leptich (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) and Megan Weschler (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt), who crossed the line in third and sixth place with times of 16:31.49 and 16:36.86, respectively. Sophomore Taylor Manett (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) secured the 10th spot, stopping the watch at 16:41.79 -- just over a second off her personal record.
