PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team's 4x800-meter relay finished fourth, while fifth-year senior Amanda Eccleston (Adrian, Mich./Tecumseh) and sophomore/freshman Shannon Osika (Waterford, Mich./Mott) each competed in the Olympic Development mile on the final day at the historic Penn Relays on Saturday (April 27) at Franklin Field.
The relay, which consisted of senior/junior Meg Bellino (Monroe, Mich./Catholic Central), senior/junior Jillian Smith (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional), freshman Danielle Pfeifer (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) and senior Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven), clocked a time of 8:25.95 to take fourth in a field of 38 teams.
The first eight finishers in the mile were separated by a little more than one second. Eccleston placed third with a time of 4:38.09, while Osika clocked a time of 4:39.72 to secure eighth place.
On Friday (April 26), Michigan's 4x1,500-meter relay team won its third title in the last seven years with a time of 17:15.47. Osika, Smith, Addison and Eccleston made up the four-person relay. The Wolverines also won in 2007 and 2008.
On the opening day at Penn (Thursday, April 25), junior Megan Weschler (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) clocked a time of 10:45.78 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish eighth in the college division. It marks Weschler's first steeple race in nearly a year due to an injury suffered last spring.
In the championship pole vault, senior/junior Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) tied for sixth place with a vault of 3.90 meters (12-9.5).
U-M is back in action this Thursday and Friday (May 2-3) at the Toledo Invitational.
