COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team earned three points from junior/sophomore Taylor Pogue's (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich) sixth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run on the first day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Friday (May 10) at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Wolverines are currently in ninth place with two full days of competition remaining.
Pogue and senior/junior Lindsey Hilton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) remained at the front of a large pack which trailed six runners who went out strong from the gun. Around the 5k mark, Pogue made a move to break up the pack, which quickly began to spread out. With 2k remaining, Pogue and Hilton had moved into scoring position and eventually finished in sixth and 10th place, respectively, with times of 35:02.80 and 35:21.88. Pogue tallied three points for the Wolverines with her sixth-place performance. In her Big Ten Championship debut, junior/sophomore Nicola Hallenborg (Summit, N.J./Summit) and competed in the 10,000-meter run, finishing 20th with a time of 36:58.95.
In the hammer throw, senior Erin Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore) finished 15th with a mark of 52.97 meters (173-9), while senior/junior Joanna Fleming's (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) throw of 50.81 meters (166-8) was good enough for 20th place.
The pole vault was delayed due to weather and was eventually postponed until tomorrow (Saturday, May 11). The event will be contested followed the conclusion of the men's decathlon pole vault, which begins at 11:20 a.m.
The women's squad will resume action Saturday (May 11) at 2:10 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relay prelims.
